About me

Or, the prose version of my CV.

I grew up in Wisconsin, then moved to Los Angeles to do a BA in Japanese. I studied abroad in Tokyo for a semester. After graduating, I worked translating Japanese manga and "light novels" for a now-defunct publishing company. During this time I also lived in Bretagne, France, for a semester working as an assistant English teacher in a high school.

I then moved back to Wisconsin, where I worked for several years as a line cook in a French restaurant, before applying to grad school for Celtic studies.

I completed an MA in Irish at Aberystwyth University, Wales, then an MA in Linguistics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I completed my PhD in Linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. My research was on the Celtic languages.

Following that, I spent three years in NYC working in artificial intelligence to build a customer service "virtual assistant" in a number of languages.

For several years, I worked as a linguist in a language program for a tribe in Oregon. I currently work in language revitalization in California.
